Asheville and Buncombe County's economy
is fueled by two major industries -
manufacturing and tourism - blending
with health care, electronics, and service
and trade businesses, which are the
area's largest employers. As a result,
the city and county have a diverse economy
that provides increased opportunities
to area residents. Buncombe County's
average unemployment rate of 5 percent
is considered the benchmark for full
employment.
Taxes
The sales tax in Asheville and Buncombe
County is 6 percent. There are several
exemptions in the areas of industrial,
agricultural and consumer purchases
such as medicines sold on prescription.
Sales of motor vehicles are taxable
at 3 percent. Asheville residents pay
both city and county taxes. Property
tax rates as of July 1, 1997, are 52
cents per $100 valuation in the city
and 63 cents per $100 valuation in the
county. The city also has a 20-cent
supplemental school tax.
